Lawyer, Security and the Rule of Law (Maternity Cover)

Steve Kostas is a lawyer with the Security and Rule of Law programme at INTERIGHTS. He joined INTERIGHTS in April 2010 from the UN Special Court for Sierra Leone where, as Senior Legal Officer, he led a team of lawyers in the Appeals Chamber in providing legal research and advice on issues of public international law, international humanitarian law and criminal law, and as Legal Advisor to the President, he provided strategic and legal advice on all operations of the Special Court. A graduate of Indiana, Johns Hopkins, and University of Chicago Law School, he previously served as a law clerk to Hon. Justice Theodor Meron, then-President of the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and as an International Bar Association Fellow in the ICTY Appeals Chamber. He was also a litigation associate at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where his practice focused on complex civil litigation, and he has worked in human rights organizations in Chicago, Washington DC, Delhi, London, and Geneva. Prior to practicing law, he earned a Ph.D. in molecular genetics. His litigation interests include the application of human rights law in counter-terrorism, intelligence-gathering and armed conflict situations. Email Steve at skostas@interights.org.
