Developments in the Middle East and North Africa

Egypt

In response to continuing developments in the region, we worked with the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) to write to the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights about the situation in Egypt.

We submitted the request urging the African Commission to do all in its power to ensure that the Egyptian authorities cease the violations and take immediate measures to safeguard human rights under the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, which Egypt is a party to.

The African Commission referred the case to the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.  On 30 March 2011 the Court announced that it had issued an order for provisional measures, calling on the Libyan government to immediately refrain from any action that would result in loss of loss or violation of physical integrity of persons, which could be a breach of the provisions of the Charter or of other international human rights instruments, and calling on Libya to report to the Court within 15 days on the measures taken to implement the order.
